March 24, 2022: Ground has been broken for a combined lead acid battery manufacturing plant and recycling facility in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Italian group Seri Industrial announced on March 22.
Royal Gulf has described the project as the UAE’s first battery recycling venture. However, BESB reported in March that Dubatt Battery Recycling had broken ground for a combined lead battery manufacturing plant and recycling facility at Dubai Industrial City, in which it is investing AED110 million.
He said the project had been three years in the planning including obtaining various regulatory approvals. Royal Gulf has described the project as the UAE’s first battery recycling venture.
August 11, 2022: Royal Gulf Industries said on August 4 it would invest more than AED62 million ($17 million) to build a lead batteries recycling centre in the United Arab Emirates.
According to Royal Gulf, the facility will be recycling nearly 60% of the lead battery scrap generated annually in the UAE. The company said it planned to invest a further AED125 million in the site, during a three-year second phase, to make the UAE “a hub for recycling metals and creating global supply chains”.
Shamsudheen Binmohideen, chairman of Dubatt, added: “The UAE generates around 72,000 to 96,000 tonnes of used batteries every year, and this encouraged us to develop a homegrown solution to ensure their proper recycling.
