A flexible purchasing of the needed energy can result in cost reduction, if the tariff structure is dynamic with a time-dependent price or if the grid fee has a power- and an energy-dependent share. In general, there are two ways to accomplish this cost reduction, namely demand side management or the deployment of electrical energy storage.
Energy storage, specifically stationary battery energy storage, plays a crucial role in overcoming many of the challenges associated with the fleet electrification process. These solutions offer numerous benefits that can significantly enhance the efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of electric vehicle fleets.
The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, responsible for energy policy in Germany on the federal level, supports the development of electricity storage facilities. Under the Energy Storage Funding Initiative launched in 2012, funding for the development of energy storage systems has been provided to around 250 projects.

Li-ion batteries are an ideal choice for energy storage in an electric grid. Their disadvantages, as of today, are high initial costs, potential safety issues, and fast aging (i.e., energy and power fade) resulting from deep charge/discharge cycling [71]. However, the costs of Li-ion batteries are expected to continuously decrease with

Distributed energy resources (DERs) are small or medium-sized resources, directly connected to the distribution network (EC, 2015). They include distributed generation, energy storage (small-scale batteries) and controllable loads, such as electric vehicles (EVs), heat pumps or demand response. The brief is structured as follows: I Description
With several improvements to the national legal framework for energy storage systems in recent years, the legislator has contributed to a favourable market environment, especially for large-scale storage systems, particularly through exemptions from grid fees, levies, and electricity tax, which are granted under certain conditions.

This study shows that battery electricity storage systems offer enormous deployment and cost-reduction potential. By 2030, total installed costs could fall between 50% and 60% (and battery cell costs by even more), driven by optimisation of manufacturing facilities, combined with better combinations and reduced use of materials.
Electricity storage is currently an economic solution of-grid in solar home systems and mini-grids where it can also increase the fraction of renewable energy in the system to as high as 100% (IRENA, 2016c). The same applies in the case of islands or other isolated grids that are reliant on diesel-fired electricity (IRENA, 2016a; IRENA, 2016d).
Today, an estimated 4.67 TWh of electricity storage exists. This number remains highly uncertain, however, given the lack of comprehensive statistics for renewable energy storage capacity in energy rather than power terms.
In the meantime, lower installed costs, longer lifetimes, increased numbers of cycles and improved performance will further drive down the cost of stored electricity services. IRENA has developed a spreadsheet-based “Electricity Storage Cost-of-Service Tool” available for download.
With growing demand for electricity storage from stationary and mobile applications, the total stock of electricity storage capacity in energy terms will need to grow from an estimated 4.67 terawatt-hours (TWh) in 2017 to 11.89-15.72 TWh (155-227% higher than in 2017) if the share of renewable energy in the energy system is to be doubled by 2030.
Long Duration Electricity Storage (LDES) technologies contribute to decarbonising and making our energy system more resilient by storing electricity and releasing it when needed. LDES can also help reduce costs for consumers through reducing their bills and by avoiding the need for expensive electricity grid upgrades.
